Valentines Day in Guatemala, February 2015

Valentines Day with girls from the orphanage

Celebrating the missionary life, family and building community on Valentines Day in Guatemala.

Valentines's Day

1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

In Guatemala, as in many Latin countries, Valentines Day or Día del Cariño as it is known here, is a day where love is expressed and chocolates are exchanged but it is also a broader holiday where people show their love for friends family and coworkers.

For one of our Friday night Bible studies with the youth group from the orphanage Fundaninos, to read a Biblical perspective on Love from 1 Corinthians 13 and discuss it’s how they could live it out in their daily lives.

Our hope and prayer is to teach these young women the value of living the life God intents for them through a proper understanding of His Word. Our current study is on the book of Esther and how it applies to them.

Woodworking and Engineering

Our Skills for Life woodworking program at the orphanage Fundaninos is going well and we are proud of the hard work and dedication of our students.

Our more advanced students are working on “Carpentry 2.0” projects. Through our pre-engineering class, they are learning vector graphics design through the use of 3-D modeling software and manufacturing and production with a CNC router in our workshop.

We were glad to invite 3 of the younger boys into our class this year and the girls are helping them learn the basics of using the tools. It is wonderful to see the multiplication of our efforts as the students we have taught are now teaching others.

Culinary Arts

The Culinary Arts classes that Sharie teaches to the teenage girls at Fundaninos are progressing well, and, let me tell you, the food is good. This year we printed up a cookbook for each students and they will be working their way through it this semester.

The dishes they are learning to cook are delicious, healthy and affordable to make. We plan to be hosting several bake sales throughout the year and are looking for opportunities for employment once they graduate.

Precious Moments School and Orphanage

At our community center serving the children from the Precious Moments School and orphanage, our classes now run every afternoon. Our two teachers provide instruction in computer skills, tutoring, prayer and spiritual guidance for the students from the school and we are glad to see the progress they are making. Please pray for the children here as it is a very high crime location where students have been lost to gang violence.

CNC Engineering and Woodworking

In our CNC Engineering classes at the orphanage Fundaninos the students have been learning industrial design and production techniques. Last month we received our first commercial order for signs from a local company, MYMSA. The students are doing all designing, cutting and finishing themselves.

We also use this program to teach the students money management and basic business skills as they receive all the profits from the sale and must deduct the cost of the materials, calculate their labor costs and place a minimum amount in savings.
